Bury St Edmunds is very easy to reach by rail and road, with the station just a 10-minute walk from the centre, and brilliant connections to the A12 and M11 to and from London, and the M14 to the Midlands. Bury’s bus station is also a mere 5-minute walk from the bustling shops of the town!

Things to Do Nearby 

The 1000-year-old abbey and its gardens are a must-see in Bury, with fascinating evidence of thriving power and wealth dating back to the year 1020! For the hopheads out there, the famous Greene King Brewery is close by, with discussions on Bury’s history, the brewing process and eventually a tasting!  Thespians won’t be let wanting more by Bury’s Theatre Royal, the sole surviving Regency theatre in the country, with a full programme of performances and even public tours to boot!

History of Bury St Edmunds

Archaeological digs revealed that Bury shows activity dating back to the bronze age, with roman coins from the 1^st and 2^nd centuries also discovered! During the Saxon era, when King Sigebert founded a monastery in Bury, this went on to become the resting place of King Edmund the Martyr who was killed by the Danes in 869, which led to the name St Edmund’s Bury. Bury is no stranger to civil unrest throughout history, with The Great Riot in 1327, and a later Great Uprising in 1381. Fortunately, Bury is now peacefulness personified…
